5 Questions with our industry expert

In this article we talk with Pat Murray, one of AMCS’ C&D waste processes experts, to learn his thoughts on five of the most commonly asked questions by C&D prospects and customers.

Pat has been an instrumental team member in direct contact with C&D customers to learn more about their key business drivers and how AMCS can support growth initiatives. He has worked with 100s of C&D companies over the last 15 years to help drive efficiencies in their operations which has a positive impact on their bottom line.

How can I improve waste identification, separation, and the collection process?

Follow the EU’s recommendations, which involves a pre-demolition audit carried out by an expert. This will tell you what materials you can expect so that you can execute your planning and control your costs. Digitalization can help tremendously with this. An ERP platform built for the C&D industry can support all of your operational processes, creating efficiencies along the way by standardizing and automating those processes.

So for instance, when you separate waste at source – and doing this properly will improve the quality of recycled aggregates and materials – you can use RFID tags. The tags will collect data on your waste and tell you location, volume, and container movement. This gives you proof that the material was collected and sent to the right treatment facility.

What advice would you have to reduce my administration overheads?

Digitalization and automation are key. Your ERP platform should handle your processes with ease creating administration efficiencies. It serves as a centralized database. The data from RFID tags, in-cab mobile devices – whatever integrated technologies you’re using – is electronically sent to your ERP. Every bit of information about your operations is in one place, easily accessible, eliminating wasted time in pulling together information from different places.

Digitising can heavily reduce administration overheads. For example, it can reduce planning time by up to 75%, which frees up your planners. You can redirect those resources elsewhere.

What is the best way to manage my subcontractors?

The best way is to digitalize your subcontractor process. Your ERP needs to have the capabilities to manage your subcontractors. That’s the ideal scenario. Or, indeed, a subcontractor portal integrated into your ERP is a great alternative. In either case, it’s about enabling real-time data and information exchange, ensuring the subcontractors are compliant with your standards, enabling you to plan activities better.

We have found that through digitalizing your sub con processes, you can save up to 20% on subcontractor costs and even 80% on invoice processing costs.

How can I improve my waste logistics?

Route optimization is key. This digital solution gets your C&D waste to sorting and recycling plants in the fewest miles. This is another way you control costs too. Consider that much of C&D waste is bulky. The heavier the load, the more fuel. Optimizing your routes in real-time can save you up to 25% in miles driven and CO2 emissions. You avoid traffic congestion and create efficiencies that you didn’t have before.

I mentioned RFID tags and in-cab mobile devices. These also ensure your logistics stay on schedule. If you send a container to the wrong treatment facility, for example, then not only is that money lost but if you discover the error in time, the journey has to be made again.

How can I better ensure compliance with industry regulations?

You have a duty of care that you manage waste according to the EU’s waste hierarchy, or if you’re in the U.S., you need to comply with LEED. After preventing waste, which is the construction’s duty, you have to determine whether waste can be reused, recycled, or recovered, and then handle those decisions responsibly, according to regulations. Digital solutions can optimize these processes. Vehicle technology can capture photos and videos as proof of compliance at various stages. Waste Transfer notes are accurate. Your information is accurate because your data is accurate.
